Existentialist Songs

Postby Baconator25 » Mon Sep 28, 2009 8:29 pm

So, we're doing a group project in our English class, and one of the things we have to do is "Find a song that contains existentialist ideas. Present the song to the class and clearly point out the lines that contain these ideas."

So, yea, I need ideas for songs. I was thinking about this one song

But I don't know if that'd be 100% appropriate.

Please don't post asking what existentialism is, because I know someone is bound to.

Hmm... well... this is an interesting song... it is somewhat existentialist...

Bein' Green, the iconic song of Kermit the Frog. The song has the singer (Kermit) questioning his own reason of being. Why was he green? What mad him this way? He reflects his being to many elements of nature. There is a lot of mixed emotions, but at the end of this song has a bit of an "ah-ha" moment in which he states he is happy with who he is...

It is sort of existentialist... might require a bit of a good argument though.

Mike's song- I don't know how people can sing like that, it sounds like he's shouting the whole time. His larynx sounds raised and it hurts my throat a little bit hearing that.
Star's song- That's one of the funniest things I've heard in a while.

Rise Against is my favorite band! I love Tim McIlrath's voice! His style has undoubtedly changed throughout the years and is definitely much, much cleaner now. The song that I posted here was one of his older works, hence the voice being like that.

For comparison, First album (2001):

vs most recent album (2014):
